SPECIAL REPORT: Parenting from a distance

As a parent or caregiver of a boarding student, you may find that parenting from afar comes with its own set of unique challenges. The thought of sending your child away during a time of rapid physical, cognitive, and psychosocial growth can be unsettling. However, it's important to remember that even though you may be physically separated, you can still play a significant role in your child's overall wellbeing and success. Maintaining a strong and healthy relationship with your child while they're away can help set them up for success beyond their time at school.

Providing nurturing support to your child is crucial during their time away. Praising their achievements, offering constructive feedback, and providing guidance and advice when needed can help your child develop a strong sense of self-assurance. By building their skills and confidence, your child can thrive both academically and personally. Don't forget to celebrate your child's strengths and accomplishments, no matter how small, to ensure they develop a healthy and positive mindset.

Adolescence is a time of self-discovery, and boarding students may be particularly vulnerable to feelings of uncertainty and confusion about their identity and sense of belonging. Encouraging your child to explore their interests, values and beliefs can help them establish a positive self-image and feel more comfortable in their own skin. As a parent or caregiver, you can provide guidance and support as your child navigates this important period of growth and change.
